เจตซุน เพมา (Jetsun Pema) เกิดวันที่ 4 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2533 ที่กรุงทิมพู ประเทศภูฏาน เธอเป็นลูกสาวคนที่สองจากจำนวนพี่น้องห้าคนของ โทนทับ ดียัลเซน (บิดา) กับ โซนัม สุกี (มารดา) โดยเจตซุนสำเร็จการศึกษาระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนต้นที่ประเทศภูฏาน ก่อนที่จะเดินทางไปเรียนต่อที่ลอว์เรนซ์สคูล ในซานาวาร์ หิมาจัลประเทศ และที่เซนต์โจเซฟคอนแวนต์ ในกาลิมพง ประเทศอินเดีย ในภายหลังได้ศึกษาต่อที่มหาวิทยาลัยรีเจนต์คอลเลจ ณ กรุงลอนดอน ประเทศอังกฤษ เธอมีความสนใจในงานศิลปะเรอเนซองส์ และมีงานอดิเรกคือ การถ่ายภาพ เช่นเดียวกับสมเด็จพระราชาธิบดีจิกมี รวมทั้งเธอยังชอบฟังเพลงพื้นเมืองด้วยเช่นกันด้วยความที่เธอ เป็นผู้หญิงที่สวยสง่า เพียบพร้อม แถมมีลักษณะนิสัยที่ไม่เหมือนใคร เป็นผู้หญิงที่มีหัวใจที่งดงาม จิตใจดี และพร้อมที่จะสนับสนุน เจ้าชายจิกมี ในทุกๆ เรื่อง อีกทั้งยังเป็นคนที่ เจ้าชายจิกมี ไว้วางใจมากที่สุดอีกด้วย จึงเป็นเหตุผลที่ทำให้เจ้าชายจิกมี ตัดสินใจที่เลือก เจตซุน มาเป็นราชินีของพระองค์
โดย กษัตริย์จิกมี กล่าวชื่นชมว่าเธอเป็นคนอบอุ่น ใจดี และมีอุปนิสัยที่ไม่เหมือนใคร ด้วยคุณสมบัติที่มาพร้อมกับความเฉลียวฉลาด พร้อมอายุและประสบการณ์ เชื่อว่าเธอจะสามารถรับใช้ชาติได้เป็นอย่างดี นอกจากนี้ กษัตริย์แห่งราชอาณาจักรภูฏาน ยังกล่าวด้วยว่า ลักษณะที่สำคัญที่สุดของพระราชินีในอนาคตของประเทศ คือ การดำรงอยู่ซึ่งความดีงาม และไม่เปลี่ยนแปลงในความมุ่งมั่นเพื่อรับใช้ประชาชนและประเทศชาติ
On 20 May 2011, during the opening of the Parliament's seventh session, King Jigme Khesar announced that he would marry Jetsun Pema in October 2011. During the announcement, he said,"While she is young, she is warm and kind in heart and character. These qualities together with the wisdom that will come with age and experience will make her a great servant to the nation."
Khesar has also commented, "Jetsun Pema is a kind-hearted girl who is very supportive and whom I can trust. I cannot say how she might appear to the people, but to me, she is the one."
King Jigme Khesar and Jetsun Pema married on 13 October 2011, at Punakha Dzong. The royal wedding ceremony was held first in Punakha followed by formal visits to different parts of the country. During the ceremony the King also received the Crown of the Druk Gyal-tsuen from the sacred Machhen and bestowed it on Jetsun Pema, thereby formally proclaiming her as the Queen of the Kingdom of Bhutan. The wedding was held in traditional style with the "blessings of the guardian deities".
Ashi Jetsun Pema Wangchuck is the Queen consort of Bhutan, as the wife of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.
Jetsun Pema was born in Thimphu on 4 June 1990 in the Thimphu Hospital. Her father is Dhondup Gyaltshen from Trashigang and is the grandson of the Trashigang Dzongpon (Governor of Trashigang) Thinley Tobgye (aka Dopola 1893–1952). Dhondup was graduated from Sherubtse College, Kanglung and has been a commercial pilot since 1989, initially with Druk Air and now Bahrain Air. Her mother, Sonam Chuki, is from Bumthang Pangtey and is the goddaughter of His Royal Highness Prince Namgyel Wangchuck (half-brother of Third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck); but she considered herself as an ordinary Bhutanese subject although her father is the half-brother of the queen of Second King Jigme Wangchuck—Ashi Phuntsho Choden and Ashi Pema Dechan. Jetsun is the second eldest among five children. Her four siblings are two brothers – Thinlay Norbu and Jigme Namgyal, and two sisters – elder sister Yeatso Lhamo and younger sister Serchen Doma (also studying at Sanawar in India).Jetsun Pema's initial schooling started in Thimphu in the Little Dragon School, Sunshine School (1995–96) and Changangkha Lower Secondary School (1997–98). Then she had her convent education in St. Joseph's Convent in Kalimpong, West Bengal, India, during 1999–2000. She did her secondary school education at the Lungtenzampa Middle Secondary School in Thimphu from 2001 to 2005. She then moved to the Lawrence School, Sanawar in Himachal Pradesh, India, in April 2006 (joined as Class-XI student) where the subjects she chose to study were English, history, geography, economics, and painting. She completed Higher Secondary education on 31 March 2008. She then pursued her tertiary education by enrolling at Regent's College, in London where she read International Relations with Psychology and Art History as minor subjects.
Jetsun Pema's interests include fine arts, painting, and basketball. She captained her school team in basketball games and maintains that interest even now. Her other diversions during her school days included participation in school bands and dance programmes. Besides Dzongkha, the national language of Bhutan, she is fluent in English and Hindi.
